Been quiet for the last couple of days. Lots of travel and meetings.
Yesterday, Duncan Riley (aka Michael Arrington’s bitch), Jim Stewart and I spoke on a panel at the evolve conference in Melbourne. The panel was about content anarchy or something. We were the last session of the day and today Kimberley (the event organizer) told us that the audience voted our session the best of the day. I bet she says that to everyone though. Jim says his favourite moment was my dildo reference. Don’t ask. You had to be there.

Caught a taxi to the airport with Ross Dawson and we had a great chat about the Singularity. Ross looks like an accountant but he’s really a major geek. He’s got a one minute video interview with my ungrateful protégé Rich Giles from his Web 2.0 event in Sydney last week. As usual, he didn’t invite me to speak. Hmph.

I’ve read “Rainbows End” by Vernor Vinge. A bit interesting, but I was looking for something more Cyberpunkish… I’ve been on a hunt lately for something Cyberpunkish.
Have a look at; Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. And another good book by the same author is Market Forces.
I’m really enjoying Rainbows End. I’m not sure how much more Cyberpunk it could be! They are living with contact lenses beaming the net straight onto their retina fer crissakes!!! Thanks for the recommendations, will check them out!

Don’t be so humble……I was at the evolve conference and you, and your fellow presenters, were very entertaining. I particularly liked the Elvis glasses you popped on at the end of the presentation – they are obviously part of your trademark.
Thanks to your little speech on the value of podcasting, i am now deperately trying to work out how i can download them to my ipod. This is going to be challenging!

awww shucks Mish. Thanks. Downloading podcasts to an ipod is easy!
Step 1. Cut a hole in the box.
No, wait, wrong instructions.
Step 1. For the podcast you want to subscribe to, click on the iTunes button on their website. It’s usually on the sidebar somewhere.
Step 2. this should open up iTunes on your PC and it ask you if you want to subscribe. Click yes.
Step 3. Make sure that under your synchronization settings for your ipod (which are under the ipod menu in itunes) you have podcasts selected. You’ll have to have your iPod connected to your PC to see these options.
Step 4. Synch your ipod! Once the podcasts are downloaded they should end up on your ipod.

Yeah, they’re wearing contacts and clothing that interfaces with the ‘Net, but by “Cyberpunkish” stuff, I’m talking more about body modifications and plugging appliances into the brainstem and stuff…
Rainbows End is another nice idea though… Some of the stuff they talk about in the book should actually be possible with today’s technology. Hell, I saw a pair of eyeglasses that you plug into your iPod video so you can watch videos right in front of your eyeballs! Price is pretty high for them, though.
Herne, yeah it isn’t snow crash, but I like Vinge’s depiction of the near-term future. As you say, it all sounds pretty realistic to me. No bodymods required. I love the idea of overlays. Image Google Maps beamed straight onto your retina???? Wicked.
Yeah, I like the idea of having a constant information flow with overlays and maps–Imagine driving down the highway with GPS, real-time traffic info, maps, and even your car’s instrument readouts right in front of your eyes! It’d be great! I also love the idea of having Google or Wiki-like information always right there for the asking… just look at a plant or a building or whatever and a little tag pops up that tells you anything you wanted to know…
