The Sub-Vocalizing Phone

Straight out of sci-fi (get used to hearing that over the next decade), comes the phone that you use without speaking. According to New Scientist:

‘A neckband that translates thought into speech by picking up nerve signals has been used to demonstrate a “voiceless” phone call for the first time.

With careful training a person can send nerve signals to their vocal cords without making a sound. These signals are picked up by the neckband and relayed wirelessly to a computer that converts them into words spoken by a computerised voice.’

Have you seen this man?

Heinrich Kieber, a 42-year-old former bank employee from a Liechtenstein bank, is wanted on suspicion of selling a cd-rom containing information about bank clients with secret (read “tax evasion”) accounts totalling over $300 billion to the German government for a fee of more than 4 million euros ($6.2 million). He is believed to be hiding in… Australia. Apparently he has gone into hiding disguised as Michael Stipe.

TPN TXT about to launch

A very exciting day at TPN. The proofs of the first book to be published by TPN TXT, the book arm of TPN, arrived today.

Designing 2050 -- 001

Designing 2050 -- 002

Designing 2050 -- 003

The book is called “Designing 2050 – Pathways to sustainable prosperity on spaceship earth” and it has been written by my friend Dr Peter Ellyard, Australia’s leading futurist.

It’s a VERY exciting book, something I am incredibly proud to be associated with, and it will go on sale, in both a print and an ebook version, very, very soon.

G’Day World #318 – Bill Liao

Bill Liao is one of those guys I just love to talk to. He’s smart, successful, humble, visionary – and nice to boot. Just who the hell does he think he is?

Bill Liao

Apart from being a successful serial entrepreneur and a co-founder of Xing.com (a massive social networking site based in Europe), Bill is also driving an amazing project called Declare! where he’s encouraging everyone to make a “Declaration of Global Citizenship”. I spoke to Bill earlier today about his background, his motivation, his vision for the human race and what we’d all do if we’re ever taken over by lizard aliens from another planet. Strap yourselves in kids – this show is pretty awesome.

The music track today is:

How Things Work

An interesting paragraph below from a Times story on Simon Mann’s upcoming TV interview to be aired in the UK.

Mann is a mercenary in prison in Equitorial Guinea on charges of an attempted coup. He has apparently done an interview from prison where he names the high-ranking British business people (including Sir Mark Thatcher, son of former British PM Maggie Thatcher) and, perhaps, politicians, who supported the attempted coup.

Two interesting things here:

1. The below paragraph indicates that Scotland Yard dropped their investigation of the coup after the London bombings. Note to self: if the cops are ever getting too close to my illegal activities, activate some of the fundamentalist patsies I have on standby to distract the authorities’ attention until I can shred the evidence.

2. Mann’s wife has been trying to stop the interview from going to air, even though his captors have indicated that they may show him leniency on account of the interview. Why would she do that? Who is she trying to protect – and why?

Simon Mann’s TV interview may reveal backers of failed coup

The interview could put pressure on Scotland Yard to revive its own investigation, which was dropped so that police could shift resources to the 7/7 and 21/7 bombings.

G’Day World #317 – Jeremy Toeman, Geeks Doing Good

Jeremy Toeman is an expert in digital media and consumer technology. Over the past ten years he has designed, built, and marketed numerous award-winning products in the “convergence” space, including the Slingbox.

In December 2007, JT arranged for 25 SF geeks, including Ryan Block from Engadget and Robert Scoble from , to do some volunteering work at the San Francisco Food Bank. I caught up with Jeremy for a chat yesterday about “Geeks Doing Good”, his motivation to volunteer, why geeks should give back more, etc.
