TPN launches “The Better World Show”

Today TPN is pleased to launch “The Better World Show“, hosted by Scott Sherman (from TPN’s hugely successful Digital Photography Show) and Cameron Reilly (host of TPN’s G’Day World, Napoleon 101 and CEO of The Podcast Network).

You work hard, you raise your family, and you try to do the best you can. But in the back of your mind you’re aware of those huge problems out there that seem unsolvable: global warming, poverty, genocides, AIDS, war. You know life has to be about more than making a living, taking care of the kids and accumulating more stuff. But when it comes to the big issues facing the planet, you wonder: What difference could I possibly make? The answer: Plenty. If enough of us take even small actions, the difference we can make is huge. It’s a tough world out there. Join hosts Scott Sherman and Cameron Reilly and help us make it a better one.

Twitter in action

So this morning I went to MSY, a wonderful el-cheapo PC components store, to get a new scanner and miniSD card. I arrived 30 minutes early, was sitting in my car listening to Ewan’s Edinburgh Fringe podcast, and twitted that I was sitting out the front of MSY in Pascoe Vale. Who should come walking past my car five minutes later but Jonathan Wrigley, to invite me over to his place for coffee. Jon lives just around the corner from MSY and saw my twitter! Keep an eye on this site – Xero – Jon’s new computer store is opening in Melbourne soon and from what he tells me this morning, it’s going to be a unique kind of concept store for Melbourne.

Spb Mobile Shell – cool pocket pc app

I installed this pocket pc application yesterday and I’m loving it. So much friendlier than the native experience. Works on Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC, Windows Mobile 6 Classic or Professional device. Any other good pocket pc app recommendations out there?

Spb Mobile Shell introduces the next generation user interface while keeping all advantages of a Windows Mobile device. It is the first program a Pocket PC user needs to install. It dramatically improves the standard user interface and adds features that most users expect from a modern PDA phone.

Why Newspapers Are Screwed

Henry Blodgett “runs the numbers” on why a major newspaper, like the NY Times, is screwed as it tries to move its business online. I’ve said this over and over during the last couple of years, but Henry has more cred, so from now on I’ll just quote him instead.

Revenue drops by more than half, 40%-50% of employees get fired, and
the company still loses money. Using the NYT’s Q2 numbers and these
assumptions, for example, revenue would have dropped from $789 million
to $285 million. More importantly, EBITDA (earnings before interest,
taxes, depreciation, and amortization) would have dropped from $118
million to -$64 million. Which means that management would just be
getting ready to fire a few hundred more people.

Mainstream media is biased – new report

clipped from pewresearch.org

The American public continues to fault news organizations for a number of perceived failures, with solid majorities criticizing them for political bias, inaccuracy and failing to acknowledge mistakes. But some of the harshest indictments of the press now come from the growing segment that relies on the internet as its main source for national and international news.
