GDAY WORLD #211 – Dr Phil Burgess, Telstra

On episode 211 my guests are Dr Phil Burgess, Group Managing Director, Public Policy and Communication, Telstra and Garry Barker, Technology Editor at The Age. We spent an hour at Telstra’s Melbourne offices this morning discussing the state of broadband in Australia.

Telstra podcast

Phil is often in the news (here are some recent stories) debating the broadband issue with other Australian corporate executives, the ACCC and the Federal Government, but this is a rare opportunity to hear him speak (loudly and passionately) about Telstra’s official position on the broadband debate for an hour.

Thanks to Phil and Garry for participating and to Paul Crisp and Rod Bruem at Telstra for making it happen. I know Phil is a supporter of blogs and podcasts (he is the guy who make Telstra’s ‘Now We Are Talking’ blog happen) so hopefully this will just be the first of many such conversations.

GDAY WORLD #210 – Brian Flemming, Atheist Filmmaker

Brian Flemming’s bio on his blog says “I make movies, I write plays, I blog.” You have to admire that kind of brevity.

Brian Flemming

The main reason for chatting with Brian was to talk about his 2005 documentary “The God Who Wasn’t There” which he describes as “a feature-length documentary partly exploring what amounts to Christianity’s dirty little secret: That Jesus Christ probably never existed at all.”

TPN’s Tech Conference Show Gearing Up For HUGE March

Yet again, Ewan Spence is packing up his old kit bag, and his faithful sidekick Crow, and spending a month annoying the hell out of the Americans, all for the benefit of TPN’s Tech Conference Show!

With Friends Like Britney’s

According to MTV’s website:

Friends of Britney Spears have revealed the singer scrawled the devil’s digits, 666, over her bald head and screamed “I’m the Antichrist” in rehab last weekend. One pal told the News Of The World, “The clinic people just didn’t know what to do. Then she started screaming, ‘I’m a fake! I’m a fake!'” The friend added, “Later that night she tried to kill herself. She attached a sheet to a light and tied it around her neck. Paramedics were called but luckily she was unhurt.” Fortunately, friends say Britney’s apparent suicide attempt was just a cry for help rather than a serious bid to end it all.

Hey – to all my friends and pals out there – if I ever go nuts, shave my head, start screaming I’m the antichrist, and try to hang myself – do me a favour and SHUT THE HELL UP ABOUT IT.

Thanks.

Britney Spears’ Alert Upgraded By Homeland Security To “RED”

The press was awash with stories yesterday that pop princess, Britney Spears, called herself the “Antichrist” and then tried to hang herself. A source told Britain’s News of the World newspaper: “She was crying and shouting, ‘I am the Antichrist!’ Then she started screaming, ‘I’m a fake!’ My guess is that after years of being protected by her mother, she finally got to hear some of her own records and realized that she has been the willing tool of the RIAA (Recording Industry Antichrist of America). The poor girl – what a shock it must have been. She always thought she was making the genuine delta blues music that she learned to love in her native Mississippi. I have it on good authority that she originally wanted to call herself “Muddy” Spears or “Long John” Spears before her career was cruelly stolen away from her by a handful of lawyers and accountants who appropriated her prodigious talents for their own ends.

Ezra Pound’s Dirt Bag Lawyers

I was just preparing to record a show on Ezra Pound, perhaps the most influential poet of the 20th century, when I came across this site, which used to carry copies of some of Pound’s best works.

On the site, you can read this recent announcement:

Canto I
by: Ezra Pound

Copyright law was designed to be a temporary monopoly on ideas granted to artists because we felt it would encourage them to enrich our lives with their creations.

This page used to have a very nice poem. However, we just received the email reproduced below from the agents of the estate of Ezra Pound. It seems that the poem is still in copyright, and they would prefer that it remain a salable commodity item, instead of becoming part of our culture. Sometime in the middle of the century, if Ezra Pound is still relevant to your life, you can make “Canto I” part of it.

If however, you think that copyright law has been hijacked by dirt bag lawyers and no longer serves the public interest, you might throw a few dollars at the EFF and let them know that you support their efforts to bring it back under control. But frankly, the lawyers of the copyright barons are much better funded, and will probably just keep turning the screws until “intellectual property” monopolies last forever, and your kids just assume that ideas have always been owned.

Pound died in 1972. Apparently his poems are now dead also. A shame. And to think he was once imprisoned and thrown into an asylum in the U.S. for being a fascist. Oh the irony. The poem I was going to read was written in 1920.

Read the lawyer’s letter here.

U.S. Atheist Congressman to come out of the Closet

The “NoGodBlog“, the official blog of the American Athiests, is all excited about the announcement that on March 12th, a U.S. Congressman/woman is apparently going to announce that he/she is an atheist. This is obviously a big deal in the country where, according to Richard Dawkins, a recent poll indicated that the majority of U.S. voters said they would not vote for an atheist.

I’m wondering how many “outed” atheists we have in Australian politics? We need a site which tracks such matters, something like “They Work For You“, the U.K. site. I’d love to see one of those operating in Australia. Does anyone have any idea where to find out the religious stance of Aussie pollies?
