How man people have read the entire bible, cover to cover? Well…. I have. A few times. And now I’m about to do it again. This time, however, I’m going to record it. That’s right – the entire bible. Old and new testaments.
Why? Because it’s a fascinating, confusing, humorous and scary piece of literature. And everyone, Christian or not, should know what it says. Ninety-nine percent of all of the Christians I’ve ever asked have told me that they HAVE NOT read it cover to cover, even the people who actually think it is the literal word of GOD. Pretty amazing.
So anyway – now all of you lazy people don’t have to read it, because I’m going to do it for you. And I’ll even explain it as I go.
The show will get its own website soon, this is just a preview.
UPDATE: This show now has its own site.
Think its amazing you got past the first line without commenting (after saying you wouldn’t) but you made up for it quickly!
Plus, as we discussed on twitter, surely you need to get your facts straight!
My facts are straight! God says “in the day” that they eat of the Tree of Knowledge, they will die. But they didn’t die “in the day” (they died 900 years later). He lied!
a) That is not the fact I am refering. You argued (on twitter) that the author of part of the book said that god said not to eat from The tree of life (before they were kicked out) and that wasn’t the case
b) What you are arguing would be fair if the author reported that he said “within the day” or “in a day” or “on the day” but he didn’t, he said “in the day”. This is open to a lot of interpretation.
c) You argue that at this (mythical) stage of the earths existence, Adam and Eva should know right from wrong. But I always took it that the suggestions of the story was as they didn’t know right from wrong, they would have such a simple life, that they would have an easy life. The example the Author gives is that they didn’t even notice that each other was naked until they knew right from wrong. If given the choice of a world before the mythical eating of the apple or after, I personally would imagine I would choose before.
d) I think the line about Serpents eating dust was more a comment that if you have to slide on the ground, your going to eat dust to move.
e) Anyone taking the bible as absolutely real, is probably either every silly or has there own agendas to push! 😉
f) You should make the podcast an animated one with cartoons and the likes! Much more entertaining! 😉
I was listening, my mind boggled trying to picture you sitting with the book, reading it out, and then you said you were reading it off your iPad, and suddenly everything was back in its place… 😛
Hmmm….Wonder if this will be approved?
Had a listen and many of your objections are insignificant and unoriginal. On the other hand, I can see that many of the things you point out would be asked by first-time readers, as well (I realize it’s not a scholarly analysis of the text; can you recommend any podcasts that do attempt a more serious exegesis?). I appreciate your humor, and look forward to the next 10yrs! It’s been a while since I’ve had any desire to read the Bible, so I’m glad you’ve decided to do this. P.S. I’m a former Christian, a manuscript scholar, and have read the whole Bible twice.
I hardly expect to come up with ANYTHING original after 2000 years of analysis, sir.
