G’DAY WORLD #288 – Matt Marks, Politics and New Media

My guest today, to talk Australian politics and new media, is Matt Marks. We discuss KEVIN07, what’s wrong with the Liberal Party, and why political parties in this country need to engage with new media.

Matt has recently written a chapter for the Crikey Guide to the 2007 Federal Election on the campaigning process and use of new media in the election campaign. Matt’s chapter is called ‘ My opponent suxs.com’ and explores new media and digital campaigning.

To quote a section: “The 2007 election campaign will see the beginning of this revolution… but any political party, journalist, commentator or activist group that fails to adequately develop a new media strategy is simply going to be left behind.”

Matt’s background lie in financial and business markets. He is a former staffer to a senior Australian Senator, a past Federal President of the Australian Federal Young Liberal movements, a Merrill Lynch Investment Banker and Wall Street broker.

Matt is currently founder and managing director of political consultancy, Marks Strategies, and is the founder of the Rightthinker blog.

$240 for 2 pieces of plastic?

    Acer Travelmate

About a week ago I tried to open my Acer Travelmate Tablet PC and noticed the little hinge where the screen attaches to the base was broken. No idea how it happened. Wear and tear I guess. I’ve had this machine for two and a half years. Now I can’t open the screen up at all. So I took it into Acer’s repair joint in Melbourne last Thursday. When I realized this morning I hadn’t heard from them, I gave them a call. They told me they had assessed the unit and it would cost me $300 to get it repaired!

I only paid $1000 for the whole machine.

So I went in today to see the quote. Turns out, the replacement hinge will cost $120, there is $60 for labour, and the remaining $120 is to replace the whole upper casing. Why? Because I mentioned that the little latch that hooks the screen onto the base at the front was broken.

$240 for two little pieces of plastic. A quarter of the cost of the entire unit. Makes you wonder what the other pieces of the unit are worth. The screen? Hard drive? Memory? Apparently not as much as the hinge and latch. THAT’S where the big bucks are.

So I told them to forget it, there’s no way I’m paying $300 for two little bits of plastic on a 2.5 year old laptop. That’s highway robbery. I paid my $50 “assessment fee” and left.

Now I’m in the market for a new laptop. I’ve been fairly happy with the Lenovo desktop I bought earlier this year. It’s bloody quiet. Maybe I should get a Lenovo? On the other hand, perhaps it’s time I bit the bullet and went Mac? Is it that time?

Did I mention that I run the largest independent media company (by reach) in Australia? You’d think there would be a whole bunch of hardware companies wanting to buddy up to me….

    G’DAY WORLD #287 – Kevin Anderson, The Guardian’s Blog Editor (X | Media | Lab)

Another video from X | Media | Labs (yes, Caroline and Melissa, I’m getting there)… this one is with the gentleman I prefer to think of as Mr Suw Kevin Anderson. Kevin is the Blog Editor at The Guardian in the UK. In this short video (my tape ran out at the end of a long day), Kevin gives his views on how MSM sites distinguish between a journalist’s blog and their articles.

Is Linden Labs Suffocating Second Life?

On Thursday the 6th of September, at 10am SL time, there will be a meeting in the amphitheater in Arsheba Academy Campus, Evenstar region in Second Life, where a bunch of disillusioned SLers will be talking to the media about the growing list of problems they see appearing in Second Life, including: Camping, Traffic System, Search, Linden, Privacy and Security, Anshe Chung, increasingly intrusive policies, failure to fix bugs instead focusing on fluff features, the general hijacking of what WE created, dictatorship, and interfering and competing against businesses here when their job is to provide the infrastructure racket, a level playing field, steadily declining server performance, bandwidth, and all but cookie-cutter support.

I would attend but it’s 4am AEST and I’ve got an important meeting in the morning I have to be fresh-faced and bushy-tailed for (which is hard enough for me at the best of times at that hour of the morning).

It certainly seems like a lot of old-timer SL people I meet in-world these days are growing tired of the long list of problems that Linden seem to be allowing / encouraging.

I have been forwarded a transcript of a recent chat session held by a group of disaffected SLers and it’s a long, long list.

These are people who are SL’s biggest supporters – hard core SLers who have spent an enormous amount of time and energy invested in making Second Life what it has become. I hope the Linden folks attend tomorrow’s meeting and take the concerns of their citizens seriously. It would be a shame to see SL self-destruct.

    Great Presentations

Watching Chris Brogan’s slide deck made me think about the other truly great presentations I’ve seen over the last decade. They are truly rare.

Here’s my short list that I’d love to learn to mimic:

    Dick Hardt’s Identity 2.0
    – saw this one in NYC in 2005, truly wonderful.

David Weinberger always does a great job as well. His presentations tend to be part photograph, part hand-writing. Check out this one he did recently to the Googles.
