I’m very pleased to be able to chat with Adrian Giles from Hitwise on the show today. Back in 1997, Adrian and his partner started the company age 23 and they recently sold it to Experian for US$240 million. We talk about the beginnings of the company, the business model, the challenges with raising VC in Australia, and what it feels like to be this cashed up by 33.

If you’re in Melbourne and you have an interest in online digital media, then make sure you get your pixelated ass to MODM #2 this coming Thursday night. Register now. We have about 50 people at the moment. Make sure you join our Facebook group as well, because I think it’s going to be a key tool for us.

Took my bricked Dopod 838 Pro into a 3 store in Melbourne Central tonight and they gave me a loan phone for the 4 weeks it’s going to take to get my phone repaired. So thanks to those of you who offered me a loan phone but I’m golden.
Mind you… this phone is a three year old Moto that’s weird ass and slow. But at least I can still check my Gmail and Gcal on it… I think.

Don’t install Compete.com‘s Firefox toolbar!! I did and it completely borked things today, forcing me to delete pretty much everything and go back to a clean install of Firefox. Admittedly, after trying to resolve it for an hour, I might have over-reacted when I told Firefox to delete EVERYTHING including my bookmarks… but after getting this for an hour every time I tried to open Firefox:
and under pressure to prep for an interview, I was frazzled.
That said, Compete’s graphs on TPN look much more realistic than Alexa’s.

Yesterday I saw my first 3D film! Took one of my boys to the Melbourne Museum and went into their Virtual Theatre, put on the glasses and they worked! It wasn’t until I had my eye surgery last year that I had any chance of seeing 3D (with or without glasses) so this was a big moment. Shit flying out of the screen at me! I had a huge geeky smile on my face. I need to see every 3D film every made now. Including Jaws 3D. Oh yeah.

Invisible Inkling has a great post on the future of newspapers. I’m going to invite Ryan onto the show.
Update: this was Ryan’s response to my email:
I’d love to come on the show sometime. The day in early 2005 when Scoble blew my mind at a talk at San Jose State University, where I’m (still) a grad student, he had his aggregator up on screen running on his tablet, then fired up Skype and called you in Australia.
Classic stuff.

Happy to announce that Tony Goodson is taking over hosting duties on The Productivity Show! Des and I just haven’t had time (ironic, I know Alanis) to get it done over the last six months, so I’m glad someone is taking it over. Tony has been listening to G’Day World and TPN since the very beginning. I remember having coffee with him in the city early in the history of G’Day World when he tried to convince me that I was the new Parky (Tony’s a pom). It’s fitting that Tony is taking over this show as he was our guest on the very first one we did, way back in June 2005. Welcome to TPN, Tony!
UPDATE: Tony just reminded me that of last weekend he is now officially an Aussie! Welcome to our fair country sir.

Just got back from a preview screening of “Blades Of Glory” at Paramount’s offices in Melbourne (thanks for hooking me up Bruce – say hi to Michael Bay from me!). Hughesy and Tony Martin were there as well. Got an interview lined up for Friday with one of the stars, Will Arnett. Should be a bit of fun. Movie was a lot funnier than I expected. The best Will Ferrell movie I’ve seen since “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy”. Blades also stars the very hot Jenna Fischer, the best thing about the US version of The Office.

My guest today (from Cafe Panetta in South Melbourne – try the Three Crows merlot, truly wonderful) on show n-1 (the last show before I have Vint Cerf on) is Gary aka “Wiz Nordberg” Wisniewski, Founder/CEO of SLCN, the Second Life Cable Network, “a professional video network designed to expand the in-world audience as well as deliver virtual entertainment to the real-world”.
I asked Gary to explain the Second Life phenomenon to me – what people currently see in it, where it’s going in the short term, long term, and the role of SLCN.
Read Wiz’s Smart Company blog.
Anyone pick the opening sound bite??

So… who is going to challenge my top score on Spinword? My best score on Spinword Eternal is 11860. My best word was “dilute”.

Today is day two of the fast. My weight yesterday morning was 95.2. Today it’s 94.2. I’m feeling it today. Headache, feeling fuzzy. Every food smell seems enhanced. It’s not so much feeling hungry, just like you’ve run a marathon. Slightly cranky and not quite with it.

I sat in on Ewan’s live Rock Show this morning. Very cool. Had a group Skype IM windows open with about 6 or 7 people in it, commenting on the tracks he was playing, making requests, asking for shout outs, etc. I’d love to have G’Day World set up like that. Live. Will have to find out how he did it.

My movie recommendation of the week: The Wrong Man aka Lucky Number Slevin, depending on which country you are in. Terrific gangster black comedy starring Bruce Willis, Josh Hartnett, Morgan Freeman, Sir Ben Kingsley and Lucy Liu. Directed by Paul McGuigan. Someone on IMDB described it as “Layer Cake meets Kiss Kiss Bang Bang meets The Usual Suspects” and I’d add in a bit of Pulp Fiction. Fast snappy Sorkinesque dialogue. Good plot twists – not completely invisible, I saw them coming, but still fun nonetheless. Smarter than most films I’ve seen recently.
DON’T bother seeing Spiderman 3. Apart from the Saturday Night Live homage (and, of course, the awesome Bruce Campbell cameo), it’s a terrible disappointment on many levels, not the least being the weak portrayal of Venom. Where is the tongue? What happened to the tongue?

Eddie Everywhere McGuire has finally been boned from the top job at Channel Nine. While he claims he hasn’t been boned, it’s obvious that he either was pushed or realized he had to fall on his sword. My guess is the latter. He’s no idiot and he has to realize what a disaster year he has lead them through. I admire Eddie, he’s built himself up nothing to become a major power player in media, politics and sport at a very young age, through sheer hard work and schmoozing. But I never thought he was the guy to turn Nine around. If they want to become leaders again they need to make leadership choices. Do something bold, exciting, innovative, not just take the same bullshit formulas that have been destroying television for the last ten years and do more of the same. Eddie has hosted some of the worst examples of television in history. They need someone in the top job who understands that television in this country is currently just a race to the bottom and the only way out is to re-invent and re-imagine, not more of the same.
I love the way the Melbourne papers are sucking up to him today. No-one wants to call it like it is. They are all afraid of him. Eddie – you’re a winner. No doubt about it. But you fucked up the Nine job mate. Boning Jessica. White-anting Jana Wendt. Cutting the News staff. Making 1 vs 100. Pretending the Beaconsfield mine was worth more than a 5 minute story.
The only good call was putting Sarah Murdoch on the screen every morning. That was genius.
