J. Storrs Hall is an independent scientist and author. His most recent book is Beyond AI: Creating the Conscience of the Machine, and he was the founding Chief Scientist of Nanorex, Inc, which is developing a CAD system for nanomechanical engineering, is currently a member of Nanorex’ Scientific Advisory Board, and is a Research Fellow of the Institute for Molecular Manufacturing. He is also known as the originator of the Utility Fog concept.

According to an article in Infoworld today:
A survey this spring of more than 400 developers and IT managers in North America found that the number of developers targeting Windows for their applications declined 12 percent from a year ago. Just 64.8 percent targeted the platform as opposed to 74 percent in 2006.

That’s a HUGE YOY decline. Now – it isn’t the complete collapse that the Java community were predicting a decade ago, but they are numbers that Microsoft’s DPE group should be VERY worried about. I’d love to be a fly on the wall at Sanjay‘s review with Bill and Steve. Note that the people surveyed weren’t “Web 2.0 developers trying to build massively scalable applications on the smell of an oily rag and hence using the freely available LAMP stack”. They were “developers at enterprises and solution providers”.
So why the decline? The article points to Vista being delayed and open source maturation. Frank? Kordahi? Any insights into why 12% of the developers abandoned you?

If you aren’t on Twitter yet, you are probably wondering what it’s all about. It’s kind of like a steady feed of… stuff. Stream of consciousness from your friends. What they are doing, thinking about, reading, watching, etc. Here’s my last couple of days of twitters e.g. the things I’ve written. Inane? Or addictive? I guess that depends on your state of mind. In a way, it’s a kind of constant background conversation between your friends that all of you can see and participate in. Like most things internet, I guess it is what you make of it. If you and your friends write about what you had for lunch, so be it. Or you can write about the current news. Or ideas. It’s like that old quote from Eleanor Roosevelt: “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”

At Microsoft’s remix event in Melbourne yesterday I caught up with Brian Goldfarb, Group Product manager, UX Platform and Tools Strategy, Microsoft Corp. Brian’s group is responsible for Silverlight , their new product for developing rich content delivered through a browser, and Popfly, their Yahoo Pipes-like mashup creator.

You’ve all heard me talk on G’Day World and The Productivity Show about how much freakin’ email I get and how it is a MAJOR blow to my productivity (and let’s not even START talking about Facebook…). Well it’s good to know I’m not the only one.
I sent an email to Sean Bonner at Metrobloggingtoday and rofl’d when I got an auto-response pointing me to this page on this blog. I need one of those. I’ve had auto-responses saying “too much email” before and they took away the feeling that I was letting people down by not getting back to them in a reasonable amount of time.
He has another great post on the subject here. I think he’s completely correct. Let’s break our addiction to foreign oil (or, actually, ALL oil) and to email.
Sigh. Okay. I’m getting back on Twitter to see if it helps me get off email. Somehow I think it’s akin to using crack to get off coke but we’ll see….
