What do Borat, Global Warming, Milton Friedman and Bono have in common? They are all mentioned on today’s show!
Shane Williamson joins me again today to talk about:
the woman who kept her dead husband in the cupboard for three years
the death of Milton Friedman
the global warming controversy
Cranky Middle Manager interview with Michael Urlocker about disruptive paradigms
new AJAX start page – Original Signal
The Gary Oldman Nokia N93 ad
and then I finish with an interview I did earlier today with Emma Phillips who wants to work with Bono.
The planet will survive global warming and climate change. Its happened lots of times. Life will survive, its pretty good at that, thats what diversity is for. People are another matter. We’re pretty fragile.
People are robust enough too (maybe not Cam), but the economies they envelope themselves in are a completely different matter 🙂
true. but that really depends on the type and extent of the climate change.
Ice ages aren’t something we can prevent. They’ve happened several times without our help and we’re overdue for one now. The thing is. Does it really matter if it snows in the middle east and russia sprouts a rainforest? Does it really matter to the earth if its climate shifts? Of course not! The earth is a lump of rock which has the good fortune of being capable of supporting life.
That said there is absolutely no doubt that such a climate shift would kill a lot of people.
Rented An Evening with Kevin Smith from the video store last week… funny stuff…
Also found a good vid at youtube… Kevin Smith talkin bout Dogma (and also how he went to protest it): http://youtube.com/watch?v=rB6q7Xbz8vE
Shane does have a good point about the local issues as Tip ONeil, former Speaker of the House, put it all politics are local.
In regards of alcohol your point may have been glib, but it’s not bad for the body. Actually good for the body in moderation. Red wine and dark beer has flavoids and other things that help the heart, but then as I said the point is moderation. 🙂
I’m not sure that all of the illegal drugs are bad for the body in moderation either, and cigarettes are bad for the body (and more importantly other peoples bodies) in any amount.
Pot being illegal started as a bit of a political thing. Keeping in mind that there aren’t any totally neutral sources for the history of the stuff, it is argued by many that it was criminalized due to relationships between the American government and DuPont, a textiles manufacturer. Hemp was a lot better for rope etc than cotton, linen and nylon which the company specialized in.
I personally believe that decriminalizing drugs really just means that you can regulate them. Its not as if drugs being illegal makes them any harder to get. Anyone who wants them can find them and the vast majority of drugs are cheaper than a night on the piss. At least if they’re legal it will take the organized crime out of the picture.
As Miriam says, it is difficult to find neutral sources about the history of marijuana, but here is a link to a very interesting story that has some pretty reputable sources.

Cam: I think that your Terra party platform sounds like most Libertarians would agree. The main idea is that people should be responsible for their own actions and that governments should only intervene in areas that are truly common like defense, road networks, and pollution laws.
The idea that someone’s health is a common responsibility is a relic of socialized medical systems and insurance laws that prevent insurance companies from actually evaluating and assigning a cost to risky behavior.
Good article Rod.
I think the Terra Party needs to have a platform that many people under the age of 40 can relate to. I’ll write a more details post about it shortly.
Speaking of Mormons I got attacked by some this morning (at least I think they were Mormons, I forgot to ask what flavor they were).
I gave them a lecture about the inconsistencies in the bible and how most denominations seem to make up the rules as they go along and asked them to show me where exactly in the bible it said that lesbians are evil and defines marriage.
I did manage to get through the ordeal without being told I was going to hell though.
I once opened the door to the mormons NUDE
I invited them in for a joint but they declined and you know what……..
They never came back !!
I love Dogma. I never miss a Dilbert when he is in it!
😉
Molly
Molly… You should see Asterix and Obelix then, Dogma is much cuter in that…
John… the Mormons were nude? They’d be a lot more interesting if they doorknocked nude! I shouldn’t make fun of them. I married one.
and speaking of weed, does anyone here watch WEEDS? I love it.
I thought you didn’t watch MSM Cam?
Molly
I just saw an ad for Weeds on Foxtel! It looks fantastic. I loved her on the West Wing.
Cam:
So what do you have against people that are older than 40?
I am a child of the 50s – just barely – and try to keep my mind flexible enough to still fit in. As I get older, I move more and more to a “live and let live” philosophy. I hate to be told what to do and try to consistently apply that same logic to the rights of others.
Rod – because, as a generation, the baby boomers have thoroughly fucked this planet like no generation before them. They need to be stopped.
Now Cam I think that’s quite unfair, many other generations screwed things up before the baby boomers arrived. They didn’t invent the atom bomb.
