Today my guest is John Allsopp – a software engineer, speaker, writer, educator and surf lifesaver, with a long standing interest in CSS, web design and development. He is also one of the founders and organizers of the web design and development conferences “Web Directions“.
We discuss “Web 2.0”, what it means, and why it is goodness. We also discuss the Web Directions conference that John is involved in running and Western Civilisation, the software business that he and his business partner Maxine run.
Then we venture in John’s views on religion and touch on Qantas’ decision to prevent a passenger from boarding a plane due to his t-shirt.
All this and more (well… not much more actually) on today’s episode!
Don’t forget – if you want to win yourself a $50 Amazon voucher, then enter the G’Day World promotion. All you need to do is send more referrals to this gdayworld.com than any other registered referrer in the month of January. So far there are only a couple of people registered and they should be EASY to beat. Please try to avoid gimmicks like “See Britney Spears Naked”. The objective here is to get people to listen to the show, not get to the site and be annoyed at being mislead. Molly.

The G’Day World Theme Song is “Save Me†by The Napoleon Blown Aparts.
There has to be something wrong with my brain. I just glanced at the page and “See Britney Spears Naked” jumped out at me…
Wrong? What’s wrong with that?
True true. No point in fighting against my nature.
Pssst.
Hey Cam, you know what’d be really cool?
A LoFi version of the podcast for those of us on craphouse broadband/too lazy to wait for it to download 😉
I think you should sell hard copy CDs of the podcast on eBay.
Ben, Cait – I’ve thought about both of those options but always thought I should wait until there was demand. Ben – where the hell do you live that you don’t have proper broadband?
Cam – how would know what the demand is, if you don’t offer them for sale? and hell Cam, many people can’t get proper broadband.
Hi Cam,
oops accidently hit submit.
I was listening to your podcast and I have to say that I agree with qantas’s decision to not let that guy with the t-shirt on the plane.
My reasoning is this. First off the guy was trying to be contraversial. In the TV I watch and radio i listen to the guy admits that he was trying to cause a confrontation. Short story is that he was a smart ass who got a little more than he bargained for.
But lets put that fact aside for one minute
The point is Cam that if you, me, or any other REASONABLE person were to look at that guys t-shirt we would simply say that he was expressing an opinion and that wether we agreed with it or not, it was his right to do so.
Fair enough
The problem is that the world has already too many UNREASONABLE people and their numbers are growing by the day. While you and I wouldnt think much of that guy wearing that t-shirt, an unreasonable person (the type that would assult someone who refused to kiss the australian flag at the big day out for example) would most probably get upset, start sledging the guy and might even resort to physical assult.
Given that people hate flying when a baby is crying on the plane, how would they react to a full on punch up?
At the end of the day it is the captain of the plane who is responsible for the well being and safety of all on board. He got told about this bloke by the cabin manager and he used the guidelines of the airline to come to a descision.
So he didnt fly.
Its a shame that the airline has to bring the descision down to the lowest common denominator (the dumbass, right wing, rednecked, dickhead) but for all the pilot knew, he might have had 1, 2, or a plane load of them !! Ya just dont know
So if your so keen about making a statement Cam, how about you wear same t-shirt next time you have to catch a plane for an important business meeting that you cant afford to miss.
Why take the risk ??
another good interview BTW
Cheers
John M
Hehe, well I have broadband, but it’s piddly 256/64 ADSL as I don’t want to fork out for more. The allowances on that plan nicely fit my torrent downloads 😉
Quite intriguing analogy though pheriphal reference by Dawkins in some chapters and on this site so maybe Cam’s analogy subconsciously inspired this way…??dont suppose reasonable to extrapolate anything from this actually if anything found the interview pretty nice and somewhat empathetic with thoughts and sometimes think this way too. This John person strikes me as pretty intelligent bloke but best part nice bloke.
Though continue walking and this travelling business okay hear interview other side planet best part travelling great but usually only when know what you are doing.
Hey, Is this the John mcguinness that taught me to Fly..?
If so Drop me a line mate, A lot of water has passed under the bridge and I would really like t share some stuff with you..Regards
Tony
