Well I’ve had some pretty big guests on this show over the years – Noam Chomsky, Ray Kurzweil, politicians, businessmen – but today is the biggest guest so far.
She’s the PodMother. The Matriarch of TPN. She goes by the pseudonym of Gran Jan but I know her as “mum”.
Ladies and Gentlemen – my mother. Jan Reilly.
She joins me to talk about… well… me.
We also talk about her views on religion, growing up with physical abuse, and living with alcoholism. And used condoms. Oh yeah. I’m going to need another five years of therapy after THAT comment. Listen to the last 60 seconds to know what I’m referring to.

Fantastic show Cam. In equal parts fascinating and moving. It dug up a whole lot of shit from my childhood though.
I have every confidence that you could have been reading at two. I’d consider you to be of at least equal intelligence to me if not far greater and when I was four at a Montessori preschool I got locked in the library whilst the others went out to play as some form of punishment and I reorganized the books in reverse alphabetical order… Well half of them, I think I only got part the way through before they came back to yell at me some more.
I agree it was a great show. Very candid and revealing. Should get Mother Reilly on again while she is visiting
ROFL. I thought Montessori schools were all huggy?
They didn’t like my type. I was too defiant. I literally had my mouth washed out with soap there on several occasions.
wow, and when we interviewed montessori for our boys we were given the impression they treated kids as adults and were able to operate at their individual “level”.
that’s the theory. In practice Montessori is really good for some people but not for others. Education wise it does wonders for more intelligent children so long as they have a good work ethic.
I could read, add, subtract, multiply and had a 3rd grade knowledge of science and geography by the time I started proper school at 5 but the downside to this is that I was bored out of my mind at school.
I also took advantage of the do whatever you like system and squeezed oranges all day every day for a solid 3 months because I liked drinking the juice after.
My report card that term read “Miriam has an exceptionally long attention span. She particularly likes squeezing oranges.” dead serious… my dad has it on file somewhere!
Wow… Cam at a loss for words! I’ll have to save that clip for later.
I started reading at a very young age as well… I’m not sure exactly when I started reading to myself, but I was told I was very young. I used to spend a lot of time by myself, so I had to teach myself a lot of different skills to get by… And my report cards always said “daydreams constantly” and “doesn’t apply himself” and “very inquisitive”…
Mine always had “asks too many questions”.
Mine were generally along the lines of ‘miriam’s natural ability…however…’ and ‘miriam has the potential…’
Cam, sorry about this it is unrelated to the show… Have to listen to that…
I am hoping that one of the guys sent you am email. Have a look at the GGP blog for the story but basically… Computer = dead… buying a new one tomorrow… (quiet yey so wife can’t hear it)
Later Mate and I am looking forward to hearing this podcast. 🙂
The PodMother was awesome! I particularly liked the stunned silence at the end…is that a trick that comes with age or motherhood – my mum can certainly do it to me!
