As you suspected, I have something to say about Iran’s nuclear energy program. In fact, I have been writing for months about the topic on my blog.
There are excellent reasons why Iran is interested in developing nuclear energy. As a country with a young population of more than 70 million people, Iran’s internal energy usage is increasing quite rapidly. It currently produces a large portion of its electrical power using fuels that are far more valuable in international trade. Replacing that fuel consumption would be a net benefit to all of the world’s energy consumers because it would add supply to a market where the balance between supply and demand is in favor of suppliers.
It also make sense to me why Iran is interested in a complete nuclear fuel cycle including enrichment. The current suppliers of that service have a long history of using it as a means to control the actions of their customers, even in fields totally unrelated to nuclear endeavors.
Rattling swords to frighten the world’s second largest oil exporter is not good policy. Only a group of people that believe that there is something more moral about dropping bombs from airplanes compared to setting them on street corners could believe that it is a good idea to take on another enemy at a time when they have all of the enemies they can handle.
At the risk of sounding really dumb Cam, what books or such would you reccommend folks read on the subject of the whole oil/US politics stuff?
Joanna Goanna, “Blood and Oil” by Michael Klare is getting great reviews.

I’d also recommend “The New Rulers Of The World” by John Pilger. He’s an Aussie.
