My number one tip on arguing persuasively without offending people: Stop and listen to each of their points before making your rebuttal. Don’t just talk over the top of them before they have a chance to make their point. If you interrupt all you will do is upset and frustrate the person you’re talking to and they’ll stop listening to you.
Also don’t be afraid of silence in an argument. Silence is your friend. Stop to form your argument before speaking.
I would offer myself up for cure a christian but I’m already pretty much cured. The only remaining evidence of my former christian status is that I still call myself a lapsed catholic.
Cam I have not listened to the podcast yet. But the fcat that you have no takers for the competition is a bummer. I just don’t know what it is we as podcasters have to do to get ppl involved.
Ppl run over the top of each other to get on a game show or they will wait on the phone for 10 minutes wasting their time. But as far as drop a comment or fill in a form or actually DO something, all me it a small thing online. It is very, very difficult. Well it has been in my experience anyway.
It was suggested to me that ppl want to consume rather than be a part of something. Is that what we have become? A shame that our listeners are reserved when it comes to contributing to our community, it would be so much better if they were.
Mim – what if they don’t shut up long enough for me to rebut them? 😉 Yeah good advice.
Dave – yeah mate it’s challenging. We need to get better at getting them involved. Anybody got any tips?
Offer Wii’s!
Molly
People manage to get some of their points through with you don’t they? :-p
Mol in order to offer Wii’s he’d have to figure out how to get his hands on one.
Colin tried to buy me one for christmas and didn’t realise he’d have to preorder (despite me saying that they were heading towards being sold out on arrival). His master plan was to call every EB Games in melbourne but after the first four laughed at him he gave up.
Miriam, according to http://www.vooks.net/modules.php?module=article&id=11350 the aussie stocks of Wii’s should be replenished in the next few days.
Cam – if someone doesn’t shut up for long enough for you to rebutt them then thier probably talking rubbish. Let them continue. By the time they stop they would have said something remarkably idiotic that they don’t even believe to be true. And then you slap them on the head…
Hey Cam
Another good episode. Well done on the office clean. I did one too during my NY break period, and it makes a world of difference.
Enjoying the free will discussion, and have also been following Scott Adam’s posts on that as well.
Its hard to argue with someone who is strongly religious. Their fallback arguments of “you’ve got to have faith”, and ” works in mysterious ways” are great ways of killing the debate, and of keeping their own mind closed. And of reinforcing the argument against free will….
Hey Des! Well I don’t know about the “faith” argument. Because the definition of “Faith” is “Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.”
And I think it’s pretty easy to get even the most religious person to agree with you that evidence is important. I’ll cover that on tonight’s show.
If you want some promotion I think you should start to push all your hosts to ask people to digg their fav podcasts. TPN podcasts have very few diggs atm and it can’t be any worse than asking for podcast alley votes.
If you have a digg account go and digg as many tpn shows you can and maybe make another account and digg them again 😛
Ok the Digg thing. Have you seen the number of Diggs that the top podcasts have? Note also the author of those podcasts, Diggnation 13570 diggs… a lot of the top podcasts are from Revision 3 – Digg related company. You go to any most listened to lists of podcasts you get the same results. Last year when this network was dugg and we got around 200,000 visits to the network (not all Diggers), it made little if any difference in numbers. I am not convinced that Digg is an effective marketing tool. As far as getting 10 or 20 thousand ppl to drive past your billboard – yeah it does that but little else. You might see a bit of a long tail but I am not sure if the effort is worth it. The total number of diggs that these top Digg ranked podcasts get is insane and skewed to the users of Digg.
No no worse than Podcast Alley – at least there though you will get a better cross section of listeners who are not biased.
In my opinion one of the best ways for us to promote podcasting and a show is as listeners tell one others about a podcast you like. Why not be an advocate for podcasting, tell 1 friend that has never heard or listened to a podcast this week. “Convert a Listener” if you like. You have a blog – blog about one podcast you like once a week. I am not saying promote Cam, me or this network – be a podcast promoter! Be nice if you mentioned a show though and then trackback to the latest episode.
@Molly – are you donating a Wii? and here is another problem and one that I initially spoke of. Listeners do not seem to be a part of the community that we as hosts are building. I have run competitions on the show we provide the ability for listeners to very easily email us and comment and as easily as clicking a button they can leave an audio comment. You get bugger all response. Look at Cam’s offer to give away stuff, nothing… and his listener base is much bigger than The Global Geek’s.
Please chat to us, email us and tell us what you think or just your opinion. As hosts we value it and it makes our day. It is the one thing that tells us that THAT person listened to the show. Wow! Otherwise we hear from the same people all the time. I want to stress over who’s feedback we include in the show because we have too many to have all of them.
So that is my challenge: Bloggers – blog about one podcast that you listen to on The Podcast Network. Why you listen to it and what makes it good? Link to the show. I am sure that Cam would appreciate it if you blogged about G’day World (you might even win $50 to spend at Amazon).
Crap I also forgot to say that if you create another account in Digg and use it. That is classified as gaming digg and they log IP’s so I am not sure that is a great idea.
Maybe we need to look at the SEO of the podcasts. I mean I have crap content on my sites (lets be brutally honest) but I get above average traffic (considering the crap content). Things I have found help:
1) USE TAGS!!!! Tag the important points about the podcast. I do it for Technorati and Icerocket. Do I get a lot of traffic from these sites? A little but it helps you google ranking having these high PR sites linking to your site. And anyone that uses these sites will see your site high on searches on them.
2) TPN uses WordPress. They should use a plugin, SEO titles (I give a link later, to busy now) plugin. What it does is change post titles to be the post title followed by the sites name instead of the other way around.
3) SITEMAPS!!!! There is a WordPress plugin to do this. I am %50 sure that TPN doesn’t use site maps. You should.
Well thats a start. I am sure there are plenty of others.
Also get out and promote. I was interested to hear Calacanis talking one point about Weblogs Inc and he mentioned about the fact that they had people that were “commentors”. I guess these where people that comment on stories, perhaps go out and find other sites to comment on and get traffic coming back.
Better go.
Molly
PS. I think Digg is just another Link from a high PR site for your Google Ranking
PS. PS. No I wasn’t donating a Wii, I am still trying to win one from the guys at Whooiz.com!
Yea but I can gaim from work and home.. lol
You do have a good point though. I think by wearing TPN gear 3-4 times a week to work and walking around Sydney with it on I am trying to promote TPN.
I should use my blog more, don’t think I have updated it in over 12 months… WoW took over my life for a 2nd time unfortunately and I stopped blogging.
Well I have blogged who is next?
http://roostersrail.wordpress.com/2007/01/11/an-irreverent-podcast/
I think I do my bit. Any time there is a chance to point back to GW or a show on TPN, I do it. If you see discussion of something you know TPN cover, point it out! If every comment gets 10 people to visit, and 1 of those stay. It doesn’t take long for a crowd to form.
