Burnside Recommends Bartlett

When I had Matt Marks on the show recently talking about politicians using Web2.0 to engage their audience, I wish I’d seen this example. Democrats Senator Andrew Bartlett (who was my guest on the show back in February 2005) has a video on his Facebook profile where recent G’Day World guest Julian Burnside QC explains why he believes why it is critical that Bartlett gets re-elected. Check out the video here. Not too shabby when the most visible defender of human rights in the country records a special video plugging you as “a person who is completely honest”. I think this is an amazing example of how to use Web2.0 correctly. This isn’t Andrew talking about how good he is – it’s Australia’s leading human rights lawyer talking about how good he is. Burnside carries a lot of weight in my book. Does something like this have an impact on how you are likely to vote?

G’DAY WORLD #293 – Adam Shand, Big Shots

Ben Barren, CEO of Feedcorp, joins me on this show to interview author Adam Shand.

As people in Melbourne will be very aware, in the last decade there was a series of high profile retributional killings involving various underworld groups that cost the lives of at least 28 criminal figures.

Adam Shand, a journalist who works for The Bulletin and Channel Nine’s Sunday program, spent four years researching Melbourne’s underworld and has written a book about it called “BIG SHOTS: The Chilling Inside Story of Carl Williams”. He became close in particular to “drug czar” Carl Williams who is currently serving a minimum term of 35 years in maximum security. Adam gives us a bunch of insight into how Melbourne’s gangland works, the background to the gangland wars over the last decade, the role of the Victorian police, the role of the Victorian mainstream media, and how it could have perhaps been avoided.

G’DAY WORLD #291 – Three ISPs Talk Broadband In Australia

IN G’Day World #291 I feature three interviews I have completed over recent weeks with senior executives from three of Australia’s top ISPs:

      Ravi Bhatia, CEO of Primus
      Simon Hackett, CEO of Internode
Ben Dunscombe, Regulatory Affairs Manager, Netspace

In a way, these interviews are a response to the show I did with Dr Phil Burgess from Telstra a few months ago (G’Day World #211).

You’ve all heard various people, including Telstra and Senator Coonan, state that Australia is lagging the world in broadband. So I asked these gents for their perspective.

I’ll be interested to know what you think of their answers.

    G’DAY WORLD #290 – Julian Burnside QC

My guest today is one of Australia’s highest profile barristers and human rights advocates – Julian Burnside QC. He is also the current President of Liberty Victoria, also known as the Victorian Council for Civil Liberties Inc, an independent non-government organisation committed to the defence and extension of human rights and civil liberties.

I have been appalled by the way Australia’s Government has acted over the last decade in the Tampa crises, the situation with refugee internment and the recent Haneef case. The legislation which enshrines these acts in law is extremely disturbing. So I invited Julian onto the show in order to help me understand how we got here, to affirm why we should all be very concerned, and to ask him if he thinks Australia, the only country among advanced liberal democracies which doesn’t have a Bill Of Rights, needs one.

In answer to the question about why we need a Bill Of Rights, Burnside points to the case of Al-Kateb v Godwin. I had never heard of it before and I’m guessing many of you won’t have either. It relates to a finding by The High Court, in 2004, that unsuccessful asylum seekers who could not be removed to another country despite their wish to leave Australia could be held in immigration detention indefinitely. As Burnside puts it “someone who has not committed a crime and has no charges against them, can be held in jail permanently”.

Is this the country we want to have?

You can find Julian Burnside’s website here and Liberty Victoria’s e-membership programme here.
