Windows Live SkyDrive Becomes Useful

A week ago I was asking around on Twitter for recommended “storage in the cloud” services and nobody was able to offer a service by a company who didn’t look like they were about to go out of business. Nobody even *mentioned* Microsoft’s SkyDrive, probably because it was limited to 1Gb and to people in the US and UK.

No more!

Today they’ve announced they have increased the (free) storage to 5Gb, it’s available in 35 countries AND… you can access is from a Mac. Nice one MSFT!

This is the first online service of Microsoft’s that I’ll have used since I dumped Hotmail in 2004. Of course, if Google had a similar service I’d probably use that, because everything else I do is with Google. And if they come out with something (which is bound to happen) then I’ll probably move over. Nice, though, to see Microsoft do something early and right in the online services space.

Shelfari – My Bookshelf

I was having coffee with TPN host Nick Bruse this morning before he and his partner leave tomorrow to travel around South America for six months (anyone want to take over the Cleantech Show on TPN? Ping me). We were talking about the application of nanotechnology to building a cleaner world and I asked Nick if he’d every read K. Eric Drexler’s classic “Engines Of Creation”. He said he hadn’t and told me I should post my library up online. It got me thinking…

As I’m once again packing up my book collection into boxes, I thought it was a good time to make a database of the books I’ve got. Bronwen pointed me to this online tool called Shelfari which is pretty bloody good. You enter the title or author of the book and it searches a database and presents you with some options. You click on the “Add To My Bookshelf” button and search for the next book. You can share your collection with others and they have blog widgets, etc. Very nicely done!

When I was about 19 I met a self-made millionaire called Peter Daniels. He gave me this piece of advice: “Spend 10% of your income on your brain for the rest of your life.” Astoundingly simple but how many of us do that? Do you get that message drilled into you from the media, the government, the education system, the church? It’s one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received.

Tonight, as I peruse through my library, I have such fond memories of so many of these titles. I could probably tell you what lesson I learned from each one. Every book I’ve kept holds a special place in my library and in my life.

If you are what you read, then the below widget contains my brain. I am just starting to add them – check back over the next week to see my entire library.

G’DAY WORLD #312 – Wayne Turmel on Great Web Meetings

Wayne Turmel

I’m sure you have all sat in “virtual” meetings at your place of work that would have bored a monk. I remember sitting in on “virtual team meetings” in my Microsoft days when I and other members of the team would be playing each other on XBOX Live while our manager droned on. It doesn’t have to be that way and my guest today will tell you why.

W. Wayne Turmel (aka dubdub) is the host of TPN’s Cranky Middle Manager and Working Week podcasts, as well as a stand-up comedian, author, manager…. and in 2008 he adds a new title to his portfolio – entrepreneur. We had a chat recently about his new business, Great Web Meetings, about becoming an entrepreneur, and other things.

Wayne has a long history as a presenter, trainer and expert in management and communication skills. He has taught Presentation Skills and Sales to Fortune 500 clients in his role as Director of Faculty for Communispond.

My first Seesmic

I finally did my first Seesmic video today. I’ve had an account for a couple of months but haven’t figured out what to do with it. Not sure how useful it is to me yet but if you don’t experiment with these things, you’ll never know. It took me months to work out Second Life and Twitter as well. Hell, I’ve been podcasting for 3 years and I am still trying to figure THAT out. Anyway, here it is. It’s called “On Fidel”.
