How about some Digg’s?
Do me a solid and digg the Vint Cerf show for me?
Channel 7 news chief gets part-time jail
Channel Seven’s head of news and current affairs, Peter Meakin, has been sentenced to up to 18 months’ periodic detention for drink-driving and dangerous driving.
I thought it was for producing Today Tonight.
Ms Culver said Meakin accelerated past a random breath testing site at North Narrabeen when police signalled him to pull over.
He forced two police officers off the road in a bid to avoid being tested, she said.
Am I the only one with a tear in my eye?
Reading this transcript on Endadget from the Jobs – Gates chat at D. My god, these guys rock.
Love this:
Single piece of advice for a new entrepreneur? Bill is talking about economies of scale, and wanting to do great things, no worry about growth and money so much. Love of the game! Steve: It’s really hard. If you don’t love it you’re gonna give up. It’s a lot of hard work, it’s a lot of worrying. Love it, have passion. You’ve got to be a really good talent scout. Build and organization that can build itself.
G’DAY WORLD #242 – Vint Cerf
Here’s the show you’ve been waiting for folks!
What can I say about Vint Cerf? One of the founding fathers of the Internet. Winner of the Turing Award. VP and Chief Internet Evangelist of Google, Inc. Chairman of ICANN. Trekkie. He’s in Facebook.
By the way, is it just me or does his cover photo here bear a strange resemblance to mine?

Rumour has it he was also the inspiration for the character of “The Architect” in The Matrix. Check out this image.
Here’s a couple of questions that I asked him:
-
What does the Chief Internet Evangelist at Google do?
-
Which job has been more fun – Google or being “special technical adviser” on Gene Roddenberry’s Earth: Final Conflict?
What was Al Gore’s actual role in inventing the Internet?
-
Back in 1973, when Vint and Bob Kahn developed TCP/IP, did they have any idea how big it would become?
-
Is the Interplanetary Internet (which Vint has been working on with JPL) for more than making sure astronauts have good access to porn on a trip to Mars?
When are we going to see IPv6 rolled out more widely?
-
Where are we currently at with Network Neutrality?
-
What is the role of ICANN and who should get involved?
If he could go back in time, what advice would he give to Vint Cerf in 1973?
It was obviously a great pleasure and honour to have Mr Cerf of the show and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. And I have to sincerely thank Stan Relihan and Carla, Vint’s Chief of Staff, for helping set it up. This morning was certainly a highlight of my podcasting career.
Here’s something new – if you’re a member of Facebook, you can ADD ME AS A FRIEND and then ADD YOURSELF TO THE G’DAY WORLD GROUP.

Kurzweil doesn’t believe global warming is a problem
Didn’t expect THAT, did you?
I’m prepping for my chat with Vint tomorrow morning and happened upon this recent interview with Kuzweil on CNNMoney where he says:
“These slides that Gore puts up are ludicrous,” says the man who once delivered a tech conference presentation as a singing computer avatar named Ramona. (That stunt was the inspiration for the 2002 Al Pacino movie “Simone.”) “They don’t account for anything like the technological progress we’re going to experience.”
I guess he means that accelerating technological progress will allow us to generate power using fossil-fuel substitutes and undo the damage we’ve already done. He might be right. I hope he is. I still don’t think that means we should stop doing what we can do now to change our behaviours though.
By the way… I’ve got something VERY exciting in the works for TPN’s audience regarding carbon offsets. Stay tuned.
G’DAY WORLD #241 – Second Life Cable Network
My guest today (from Cafe Panetta in South Melbourne – try the Three Crows merlot, truly wonderful) on show n-1 (the last show before I have Vint Cerf on) is Gary aka “Wiz Nordberg” Wisniewski, Founder/CEO of SLCN, the Second Life Cable Network, “a professional video network designed to expand the in-world audience as well as deliver virtual entertainment to the real-world”.
I asked Gary to explain the Second Life phenomenon to me – what people currently see in it, where it’s going in the short term, long term, and the role of SLCN.

80% of Podcast Listeners Seek Out Products They Hear About (from SearchEngineWatch)
As reported in the Guardian, a survey of over 300 U.K. podcast users done by Chrysalis Radio’s download division found that 80% of those surveyed indicated that they would be more likely to seek out products and services after hearing about them.
Before rushing out to promote products via podcasts, it should be noted that the most popular subjects for audio downloads are books and films (not search engine marketing, surprise), and 55% of listeners seek out podcasts on entertainment topics. Electronic goods and gadgets are good targets, for 49% of listeners downloaded podcasts about gadgets and electronic goods.
The survey also found that podcasts have an underexploited social component inasmuch as 90% of those surveyed said they would consider forwarding audio shows to friends. Podcasters not already doing so should consider adding social bookmarking to their show’s landing pages.
Confirmed by the survey is that podcasts are in a time-shifting medium. 75% of listeners listen at their convenience not during live show times and a similar number listen while away from home. While listening on an MP3 player or mobile phone (50%), podcast fans are engaged in exercise (10%), traveling on public transportation (20%) or doing housework (12%). Podcast listeners are dedicated listeners with 25% listening for up to two hours a day, but they are time-challenged, and a third of the time do not listen to their entire downloads. This suggests that if you want to make a point in your podcast, make it early since you may not get a chance to be heard if you wait until the end.

TPN listed in the Top 60 Aussie Web2.0 Apps
Ross Dawson of Future Exploration Network has compiled a list of Aussie Web2.0 startups for ReadWriteWeb. He was nice enough to include TPN in the top five with Omnidrive, Atlassian, Gnoos and Minti. I’m still not exactly sure that TPN is a Web2.0 company and I’m not sure Atlassian (enterprise wiki software) is either… or Omnidrive (online file storage) for that matter (although Ross says it is becoming “a highly diverse, deeply integrated online utility”, whatever that means). Anyway… it’s all good exposure. RWW has a pretty huge readership. Thanks Ross. When are you going to invite me to speak at one of your events? I see you’ve got my ungrateful protégé speaking. Bah.
And thanks Richard McManus. I feel bad for taking your money at liar dice at the TechCrunch ranch now.
And if you believe that…. I’ve got a Web2.0 Bridge to sell ya.
