On The Pod #35 – Amy Wohl

I first met Amy Wohl over Skype about six months ago when Buzz Bruggeman was doing one of his “hey look I know a podcaster from Australia!” things, Skyping me from one of the 1000 or so conferences he must attend each year, to show someone how incredibly cool Skype is.

I then met her in person at DEMO in Arizona last Feb, and had a lovely meal with Amy and her husband, Buzz and Andy Ruff (Microsoft’s Entourage Product Manager).

So, who is Amy Wohl? Well she has been around the PC industry for 3o years, working as a strategist and consultant to most of the big PC firms. She knows Gates, Jobs, McNealy et al on a first name basis. THEY TAKE HER CALLS.

From her website:

Amy D. Wohl is President of Wohl Associates and one of the best known consultants in the computer industry. Mrs. Wohl is an acknowledged expert in office automation, graphical user interfaces and client/server computing. She was a pioneer in the field of word processing, but she works in many areas of computing. Mrs. Wohl is editor and publisher of Amy D. Wohl’s Opinions, a monthly newsletter.

Wohl is an experienced commentator on the computer industry and is widely quoted in business publications. She has been advising vendors on product design and marketing issues and helping end-user organizations plan for and design real systems for 20 years. Prior to forming Wohl Associates, Mrs. Wohl was President of Advanced Office Concepts Corporation. She also worked at the Datapro Research Corporation division of McGraw-Hill as Executive Editor of their Office Systems Group and Director of Office Automation Consulting. A noted speaker, Mrs. Wohl has addressed computer industry topics at meetings and conferences around the world. In 1985, she was awarded the Ada Lovelace Keats award of the Association of Women in Computing for her service to the industry and in 1994 was voted one of the Top 100 Women in Computing.

So gather round ye children and listen to us chat with someone who knows a lot more than you do. Or even us (and that says a lot!). 🙂

Gday World – The Blogtalk Downunder Sessions #1

Between the 19th and 21st of May 2005, i was lucky enough to be invited as a guest to attend the Blogtalk Downunder conference being held in Sydney, Australia.

Blogtalk Downunder was the first blogging conference to be held in Australia and had some interesting speakers…including….one of the few (if not only) Australian politician’s to write and maintain his own blog, Senator Andrew Bartlett. You might Remember Senator Bartlett as Cameron interviewed him for a G’day World show a few weeks ago.

Well, i didn’t interview the Senator, but i did record his presentation at the conference. The recording quality is average as it was recorded staright onto an iPod with an iTalk, that was sitting on the lecturn directly in front of him. I have one more show where i recorded small 5 minute interviews with a few people that i will be putting up later this week as well.

Enjoy 🙂

  • On The Pod with Senator Andrew Bartlett

On May 11th I had the opportunity to interview Senator Andrew Bartlett, Deputy Leader of the Australian Democrats, about the Federal Budget. My goal with this show wasn’t to provide cutting edge political commentary – because I can’t. That’s wayyy out of my league (and I’m sure you’d all agree).

The idea with this chat was to get one of Australia’s most experienced political leaders (Senator Bartlett was the leader of the Democrats for several years and has been a Senator since 1997) to help me get my head around whether or not this budget was good, bad or ugly and why. Is Treasurer Peter Costello really the Aussie equivalent of Senator Palpatine? Or is he Yoda? Is he doing a good job or is he screwing up our fine country? And why the hell do they have to carry on with all that schtick in Parliament?

Find out in this casual chat with a polly.

On the Pod with Des Paroz

Time to get a few more Australians on the show….so we got in touch with Des and said..”Des..how about it??”…and he gave us the thumbs up.

Des Paroz has been working over at Acer Compters for nearly seven years.Whats he do?? Well…he looks after all of their e-commerce activities and IT Operations at the moment but has been involved in all sorts of things during his time at Acer. Check out his bio page for the details.

We talk about Media Centers and are they a central device or a peripheral device, how he got into computers and marketing from doing economics at university, his time at NCR in Japan, Australia and the US, his work with web based travel systems and Galileo, his thoughts on blogs, how they deal with channel partners at ACER, the NOFOLLOW tag, the ACER model of business and how it differs from the Dell model, what are ACER’s goals in Australia, his thoughts on TabletPC’s, podcasting and finally we briefly touch on scuba diving…yep…we cover a lot… 🙂

    Thnx for your time Des…
