I’m back on the diet wagon again. I’ve been off of it now since August and I’ve put on a couple of kilos from where I was when I finished the process. So I’m back on it. Lose a kilo a week.
So anyhoo, I got back from taking the kids to their chess club this morning and grabbed a San Pellegrino Limonata out of the fridge. As i have to write down everything that passeth through my lips, I read the label.
Get this. You know those little bottles of Limonata? How many servings would you say is in one of those? Half? A quarter? Oh no. According to the nice folks at San Pellegrino, that there is TWO SERVINGS. Right. Maybe in Oompa Loompa land. Give me a frakkin break you morons. The Limonata bottle is 200ml and according to the label contains 226kj per serving of 100ml. That’s 452kj per bottle for those of you failed Grade One math.
Compare that to the 340ml bottle of Bundaberg Diet Ginger Beer. They think a serving is 250ml (we must grow ’em bigger in Bundy than they do in Italia). And each serving of BDGB contains only 85kj. So a whole 340ml bottle contains 119kj – a quarter of the kilojoules in the tiny little munchkin-sized bottle of San Pellegrino.
Now I know one is diet and the other isn’t but that isn’t my point. My point is the BULLSHIT they try to feed you on these labels. If you want to lose weight, learn to read the labels. Shouldn’t there be a standard servings size for drinks like this?

About a month ago, Clarke Scott and I launched wHooiz in STEALTH mode. We were so successful at keeping it in stealth mode that most of you haven’t heard of it. So now we’re moving it up to WHISPER mode. Which basically means we’re talking about it… but not much. We’d really like to get some feedback on it from some of our closest friends – which means you.
What is wHooiz? Well it’s basically the wikipedia of people. Listen to the show for more information.
If you’d like to provide some feedback on wHooiz, please jump over to the TPN forums.

Thanks to a feed error that Caitlin is getting from the G’Day World feed, I was prompted this morning to check out Netvibes and I was immediately hooked. I’ve now dumped Bloglines and will be using Netvibes as my default home page / RSS reader.
What is Netvibes? Here’s a nice description from masey’s excellent step-by-step guide to configuring it:
Netvibes.com is a custom made web 2.0 home page solution that allows you to create a personalised page filled with content that you find useful… that is relevant to YOU! It’s ideal for your browser homepage and can be accessed from any web enabled computer anywhere!
It’s very cool. Check it out.
By the way, I still haven’t figured out why the G’Day World feed isn’t working inside Netvibes. It seems to be working okay in iTunes and Bloglines. Anyone else noticing problems?

Lynn Fischer now has over 1,000,000 healthy cookbooks in print, and her “Low Fat Cooking for Dummies” has been an amazing best seller for the past four years. With so much talk in the media at the moment about the rise and rise of Type II diabetes, I thought it was time for us to talk more about eating to live. So when I met Lynn by chance in San Francisco, I picked up some easy to follow tips for you fat, nerdy geek types out there. 🙂

While I was in the US, I bought the Texas Hold Em game for my iPod from iTunes. Quick review – it rocks! Very nicely put together and quite addictive.
Okay, so much for the good news. Here’s the bad news. I bought it from my laptop and synched it to my iPod. So far so good. Of course when I got home yesterday and synched my iPod with my desktop, the game disappeared! I’ve just spent the last 15 minutes trying to figure out how to get the game back on my desktop and so far, no luck.
I’ve googled it and can’t easily find the solution. Any iTunes gurus out there who want to give me a hint?

For those of you in Melbourne town, I’ll be taking my video camera down to the Bourke Street Mall on Nov 24 to cover “Buy Nothing Day“. Why not come along and join in the merriment?
According to Wikipedia:
Buy Nothing Day is an informal day of protest against consumerism observed by social activists. It was founded by Vancouver artist Ted Dave and subsequently promoted by the Canadian Adbusters magazine. Participants refrain from purchasing anything for 24 hours in a concentrated display of consumer power. The event is intended to raise awareness of what some see as the wasteful consumption habits of First World countries.
There’s a detailed explanation of the idea from our friends across the Tasman. Here’s an excerpt:
Why don’t you want people to shop?
We are saying we want people to think about what they buy, and whether consuming ever-more actually does increase quality of life. The effects of over-consumption on the environment (such as toxic pollution and climate change) are widely known. These mean we need to reduce consumption, especially in many Western countries like New Zealand that are consuming much more than their fair share of resources. We are also concerned with the role of advertising, the effects of global trade liberalisation and inequities between the developing and developed worlds.
Events:
The Melbourne Culture Jammers will be back in the Bourke Street Mall, cutting up credit cards. Join us. 11am-2pm, Friday November 24th.

As part of my new job as part-time entertainment gossip mongerer for the showBUZZ podcast, I’ve had to learn how to find stuff like this – the recently released 19 second clip of Britney Spears’ alleged sex tape that rumours say her ex-husband K-Fed is going to sell the full version of. WARNING: NOT WORK SAFE… unless, like me, you work for yourself. In which case, bring it on. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.

Kalle Lasn talks about using TV commercials to disrupt the propaganda of corporations who are propagating dangerous memes. This famous TV commercial featuring Yul Brynner helped change the attitudes people had towards smoking cigarettes.
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNjunlWUJJI]
Accordng to Wikipedia:
Brynner died on October 10, 1985 (the same day as Orson Welles and my 15th birthday) in New York City at the age of 65. The cause of death was lung cancer brought on by smoking. Throughout his life, Brynner was always seen with a cigarette in his hand. In January 1985, nine months before his death, he gave an interview on Good Morning America, expressing his desire to make an anti-smoking commercial. A clip from that interview was made into just such a commercial by the American Cancer Society, and released after his death, which includes the warning “Now that I’m gone, I tell you, don’t smoke.”

Last night was my final night in SF and what a night it was. The Aussies, including myself, the Atlassian boys, the Touchstone boys and the Tangler boys drove down to Palo Alto to have dinner at University Cafe with fellow Aussie Nik Cubrilovic from Omnidrive, honorary-Aussie Richard MacManus from Read/Write Web, Gabe Rivera from TechMeme, and Ouriel Ohayon from TechCrunch France.
After dinner we headed over to Michael Arrington‘s place to play poker and liar dice. Mike Cannon-Brookes cleaned us out in Texas Hold Em and Arrington and I won a round each of liar dice. It was a great night which finished about 5am.
My tip from the evening – if you ever get a chance to play poker with MCB or Arrington for big money – watch your wallet. These guys are sharks.
A shout-out to Nik Cubrilovic for setting up the night and to Arrington for letting us use his crib. I haven’t had a night like that since I was 17. I fly out late tonight and get back to Oz on Tuesday.
